How to read a tide chart
A tide chart plots the predicted water level through the day. This one is for Half Moon Bay on Thursday, October 1. The line climbs to high tides of 3.9 ft at 3:12 AM and 6.0 ft at 1:51 PM and drops to low tides of 2.9 ft at 7:32 AM and −0.2 ft at 9:32 PM. The gap between the highest and the lowest water, 6.2 ft, is that day's tidal range.
Heights are measured from mean lower low water (MLLW), the average height of each day's lower low tide, so the lowest tides can fall below the 0 ft line. The 9:32 PM low, at −0.2 ft, is one of those negative tides.
None of the lows is a tide pool window, which on this site means a low tide of 1.0 ft or lower between sunrise and sunset. The lowest water of the day comes in the shaded night.
The guide on how to read a tide chart labels every part of a chart, from higher and lower highs to the tide pool band, and explains our weekly tide table and monthly calendar.
Predicted tide at NOAA station Pillar Point Harbor on Thursday, October 1: high tide 3.9 ft at 3:12 AM, low tide 2.9 ft at 7:32 AM, high tide 6.0 ft at 1:51 PM, low tide −0.2 ft at 9:32 PM. Sunrise 7:06 AM, sunset 6:53 PM.
Heights in feet above mean lower low water (MLLW); the dashed line is 0 ft. Shaded parts are night.
