Predictions from NOAA station Monterey, near Monterey. These are predictions, not live readings. How we use NOAA tide data
Monterey has a full NOAA prediction station, and NOAA builds on it elsewhere in the bay: the Santa Cruz tides, across the water, are this station’s highs and lows shifted by a few minutes. Because the Monterey station is predicted in full, the tide curve on this page is NOAA’s own forecast of the water level, not a line drawn between the highs and lows.
If you are checking the tide for tide pooling, the shore to aim for is in Pacific Grove, next to Monterey, where the Great Tide Pool lies on Point Pinos.

The Great Tide Pool, Monterey Peninsula
The Great Tide Pool is not inside Monterey’s city limits. It is in Pacific Grove, next to Monterey, on Point Pinos, where the Point Pinos Lighthouse also stands. The marine biologist Ed Ricketts collected shore animals there, and John Steinbeck described the place in Cannery Row.
The point divides two marine protected areas. On the bay side, Pacific Grove Marine Gardens State Marine Conservation Area covers about 1.5 miles of coast between Lovers Point and Point Pinos, and fishing for finfish is the only take allowed. On the ocean side, Asilomar State Marine Reserve runs about 2 miles from Point Pinos south to Point Joe, and nothing may be taken at all. Either way, the animals in the pools stay where they are. For exact boundaries and regulations, see CDFW’s page on the Pacific Grove Marine Gardens and Asilomar protected areas.
For Monterey tide pools at Point Pinos, plan with the tables on this page: the predictions come from NOAA’s Monterey station, the nearest one this site uses for the Pacific Grove shore.
Protected shoreline from Cannery Row to Asilomar
Monterey’s own rocky shore is protected too. From the Coast Guard jetty to the western edge of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the water is Edward F. Ricketts State Marine Conservation Area, named after the same biologist. The only take allowed there is recreational hook-and-line fishing for finfish and a limited commercial kelp harvest. From the aquarium west to Lovers Point, including Hopkins Marine Station, Lovers Point-Julia Platt State Marine Reserve allows no take of any kind. So from Cannery Row to Asilomar, a low tide is a chance to look, not to collect.
