Predictions from NOAA station Golden Gate, near San Francisco. These are predictions, not live readings. How we use NOAA tide data
Tides in San Francisco come in two sets on this page, because the city has two shores. The main predictions are for NOAA’s Golden Gate station, at the mouth of the bay. Ocean Beach, on the Pacific side, gets its own block from NOAA’s Ocean Beach station, where every high and low tide arrives earlier than at the Golden Gate.
The top of the page shows the next low and high tide at the Golden Gate. Further down are the Ocean Beach tides, a week of Bay Area tide tables, a two-month calendar, the highest high tides predicted for the coming winter, and why tide times shift as you move into the bay.

Ocean Beach at low tide
Ocean Beach is the 3.5-mile sand beach along San Francisco’s western edge, next to Golden Gate Park, and the National Park Service manages it as part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. NOAA predicts its tides from the Golden Gate station, with every high and low moved earlier.
A low tide at Ocean Beach, San Francisco, is for walking the sand, not for swimming. The Park Service strongly discourages swimming here because of rip currents, and warns that people have been pulled out in water only about 3 feet deep. Sneaker waves can run far higher up the beach than the waves before them, so face the water as you walk and stay off the rocks at the water’s edge. If you are checking low tide in San Francisco at Ocean Beach, use the times in this block, not the Golden Gate times at the top of the page.

The Embarcadero at king tides
San Francisco king tides at the Embarcadero are the ones that make the news. On the highest winter tides, bay water has come over the waterfront edge southeast of the Ferry Building, around Pier 14. In January 2019 the Port of San Francisco closed Pier 14 and a lane of traffic during one of these tides.
This page has no prediction for Pier 14 itself. NOAA’s Pier 41 station at North Point, one of the three in the offsets table, has its high tides about 13 minutes after the Golden Gate. A KTVU meteorologist has noted that minor king tide flooding is usually at its worst within about an hour of high tide, so keep an eye on the hour around each high tide in the table.
Why tide times differ around San Francisco Bay
NOAA predicts tides inside the bay from its Golden Gate station (9414290) by shifting the times and adjusting the heights. The table shows those adjustments for three stations: a positive time means the tide comes that many minutes after Golden Gate.
The offsets follow one pattern. On the open coast at Ocean Beach, highs and lows come before the Golden Gate; at Pier 41, Alcatraz and Sausalito, inside the bay, they come after it. Pick the station nearest to where you will be. For a spot deeper in the bay, look up NOAA’s prediction for the station closest to it on NOAA Tides and Currents instead of adjusting these times yourself.
| NOAA station | High tide time | Low tide time | High tide height | Low tide height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Francisco, North Point, Pier 41 | +13 min | +11 min | +0.2 ft | +0.0 ft |
| Alcatraz Island | +14 min | +18 min | +0.0 ft | +0.0 ft |
| Sausalito | +10 min | +14 min | Golden Gate height × 0.97 | Golden Gate height × 1.00 |

Tide pools near San Francisco and the Bay Area
This page does not rate tide pool days for San Francisco: its main station is in the Golden Gate strait, not on a tide pool shore. For tide pools in the Bay Area, use the Half Moon Bay tide chart, on the coast south of the city. It lists every daylight low tide of 1.0 ft or lower in the next 30 days, with a rating for each.
